WILBER —  Amongst the high points and the low points, the Wilber-Clatonia gridiron squad picked up a big 51-0 season-opening win over Auburn Friday night in Wilber.

The high points included 23 first-quarter points. At the opposite end of the scale were 5 fumbles — all in the second quarter.

Those two facts didn’t escape notice by W-C head coach Lynn Jurgens, who was cautiously optimistic about the season probabilities for the Wolverines.

“Coming out and scoring 23 points was big because we wanted to get off to a good start just to get our confidence up and make them doubt themselves a little,” Jurgens said. “However, I was afraid we would have a number of turnovers in a first game. We’ve struggled with that in the past and have emphasized it in practice, but I just didn’t know we would have as many as we did.

“Thankfully, we were able to work through it,” he continued. “That is definitely an area of concern we need to address; we just need to keep working.”

Jurgens admitted that, in the end, the highs outnumbered the lows.

dorvbDORCHESTER — Setting goals for a season is normal for volleyball teams, but setting — and achieving — first-match objectives doesn’t happen on a regular basis, unless you’re Dorchester.

The Longhorns lost their first two season matches Thursday at home, but they achieved a goal that, according to head coach Larry Burrows, is crucial to the team’s success this season.

“We set a team goal to serve 90 percent efficiency in that first match and we met that,” Burrows said. “We served very sound. Another goal was to make them earn points, not just give them away. Our serve-receive was there, but you could tell it was the first game of the season…and that’s something we haven’t been able to really simulate in practice with the team we have.”

And a young team it is with over 50 percent freshmen.

The Longhorns dropped the match with Weeping Water 25-16, 25-14 in a contest Burrows said looked like “six new girls on the floor.”

“It was definitely opening-game jitters with a young team on the floor,” he said. “We had to settle down. Just figuring out the system, dissecting what we had been trying to accomplish in the preseason practices and putting it into practice was tough at times.”
